Shelly Sun, Chief Executive Officer, Co-Founder
When Shelly Sun and her husband, J.D., launched the BrightStar Care franchise, it was the first and only franchising company in the country to specialize in both medical and non-medical care and health care staffing. Shelly has guided the rapid and strategic growth of BrightStar Care from one corporate-owned location in 2005, to more than 260 locations nationwide. The Women Presidents Organization and American Express Open recognized BrightStar Care as #1 in their Top 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Led Organizations in 2011 and 2012, moving up from #2 in 2010. In spring 2011, Shelly and BrightStar were featured on the hit CBS series “Undercover Boss.” Shelly was selected as the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009, becoming not only the youngest recipient of this impressive award, but also only the second female recipient.
In October 2011, Shelly published her first book, Grow Smart, Risk Less – a low-capital path to multiplying your business through franchising, where she discusses her journey as an emerging franchisor through amazing growth, lessons learned and game-changing ideas.
Shelly holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Science degree in accounting from the University of Colorado. Prior to BrightStar, Shelly worked as the VP of Finance for Avolar, a former division of United Airlines, and in executive finance positions with CNA Insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
