Estimates of the world’s population age structure at various points in the past indicate that children under age 5 have outnumbered older people. In fewer than 10 years from now this will change (U.S. National Institute on Aging and U.S. Department of State, 2007). For the first time, people aged 65 and over are expected to outnumber children under age 5.
